Морской словарь |
Today, this venetian-developed military transport vessel would be called a “landing ship, horse.” large for their age (about 2,000 tons), with two or three masts carrying lateen sails, these ships were called usciere after their large ports (usci) designed to facilitate the loading of horses. these were normally cut into rounded sterns, but for assault landings by the fourth and seventh crusades (1202 and 1248) they were placed in the bow to allow mounted knights to ride directly into action. this innovation anticipated the landing ship, tank by roughly threefourths of a millennium.
