Floating fiber optic scanner, английский
A device that allows a submarine to scan the surface without the need for an optical periscope. while the boat remains at depth, scanning equipment—which includes high-definition color and monochrome television cameras, thermal imager, eyesafe laser rangefinder, electronic support measures sensor, communications receiver, and global positioning system receiver—is raised to the surface on a buoyant platform tethered to the submarine by a reinforced fiber optics cable that transmits visual images to large-screen displays in the boat’s control room. operating depth is constrained only by the strength of the pressure hull and the length of the tether. floating production, storage, and offloading system: this involves anchoring a vessel near one or more producing platform(s) to accept crude oil for processing, and store it until it can be offloaded into tankers for transfer to facilities on shore. often called by the abbreviation fpso, these systems are especially effective in deepwater locations where an underwater pipeline would be infeasible, or when oil deposits are too small to justify the cost of a pipeline. see also offshore mooring.
