Rear admiral (lower half ), a single star centered on the flag. • royal navy flag officers: the personal flag of an admiral of the fleet is the union flag with dimensions of 1:2 rather than the usual 2:3 of british admirals’ flags. originally, all admirals used a red saint george’s cross centered on a white ground. it was flown by a rear-admiral at the mizzen, vice-admiral at the fore, and admiral at the main. when 3- masted ships disappeared, a full admiral retained the plain saint george’s cross, with subordinate ranks identified by red roundels. a vice admiral has the same flag with a single red ball centered in the upper hoist canton, while a rear admiral’s flag has red balls centered in both the upper and lower hoist cantons. a commodore, who ranks as a onestar, has a swallow-tailed broad pendant with a red saint george’s cross on a white ground. 119 flags • commanders in chief: the flag worn on a british warship whenever the lord high admiral (currently the monarch) is embarked was designed in 1929 and is a golden anchor displayed horizontally on a crimson ground with twin gold ropes, coiled but not fouled. in the united states, the president’s flag (designated by executive order 10860 which came into effect on july 4, 1960) is a dark blue rectangle bearing a shield of thirteen red and white stripes on the breast of an eagle holding the national motto in his beak, a sheaf of arrows in his right talon, and an olive branch in his left. behind the eagle is a “radiating glory” and the whole is surrounded by a circle of fifty stars. • other personal flags: the cno’s flag is blue over white, divided diagonally from lower hoist to upper fly, with the device of the office centered on the flag. this is an eagle with the u.s. shield on its breast and holding an anchor horizontally in its talons. four stars in a diamond pattern, white on the blue and blue on the white indicate the cno’s rank. the british equivalent, officially known as chief of naval staff (but sometimes using the former title of first sea lord), has no individual flag, but unofficially flies an admiral of the fleet’s flag even though he does not hold that rank, which is in abeyance. the vice–cno has a personal flag divided into four by crossed diagonal lines, colored blue in the hoist and fly, and white in the upper and lower sections, but otherwise identical to the cno’s.
