Cryptozoology, английский
Generally considered a pseudoscience, cryptozoology refers to the study of hidden animals (greek kryptos = hidden + zoon = animal + logos = knowledge or study). it involves the search for living examples of animals believed extinct, as well as undiscovered creatures for whom anecdotal evidence exists in the form of myths, legends, or unconfirmed sightings. its practitioners are known as cryptozoologists and the animals that they study are called cryptids. the discipline, has not been embraced by the scientific community, which claims that many self-styled cryptozoologists are amateurs who make fundamental errors of reasoning and fact, or tend to give undue weight to unreliable eyewitness accounts. scientists generally agree that thousands of unknown animals await discovery, but argue that mega-fauna are unlikely to exist in sufficient numbers to sustain a breeding population without being detected. cryptozoologists counter that they have been seen and reported, albeit mostly by non-scientists, moreover, that much of the planet remains unexplored, especially ocean deeps, while the comparatively recent discoveries of coelacanth, giant squid, and megamouth shark confirm that large sea creatures can remain undetected for centuries (see appendix). cuckold’s knot: the hitch used to secure a rope to 87 cuckold’s a spar, consisting of a single loop with overlapping parts seized together (also cuckold’s neck).
