Liberty, английский
  1. A relatively short period when a sailor is allowed ashore for recreation. see also shore leave.

  2. Permission to go on shore or ship-visiting.

  3. Permission to be relieved of all duties and be absent from a usn ship or station for less than 48 hours. the rn uses the term shore leave, but calls those who get it “libertymen” and sends them ashore in a “liberty boat.” authorized absence longer than 48 hours is called leave in both rn and usn.

Liberty ship, английский
    World war ii u.s. built merchantman, based on vessels ordered by britain to replace ships torpedoed by german u-boats. it had five cargo holds, eight watertight bulkheads, and displacement of 14,245 tons. for rapid and inexpensive mass-production, faster than u-boats could sink them, they had welded hulls, made assembly-line style from prefabricated sections. by 1943, three new liberty ships were completed every day, and the total of 2,751 was by far the largest number ever made to a single design. see also victory ship.

    Spanish for mountain-dwellers, applied to runaway african or (sometimes) american indian slaves, many of whom took to piracy. in the 1570s, the cimarrones of panama allied with sir francis drake who described them as “a black people which about eighty years past fled from the spaniards their masters, by reason of their cruelty, and are since grown to a nation.” also called maroons.
