An underwater breathing device, invented by captain jacques cousteau and french engineer emile gagnon in 1943 to enable divers to operate independently of surface support. this was one of the earliest examples of scuba, which has since been considerably improved to allow dives of longer duration and greater depth. also hyphenated (aqua-lung) and two words (aqua lung).
