- 1. in carding, a large cast iron shell, with an outer diameter of 40 to 45 inches, completely covered with card clothing on the surface. the shell is mounted rigidly on a shaft which projects at each end to rest in bearings. the cylinder must be accurately balanced since it rotates at speeds of 160 revolutions per minute and higher. 2. the main roll, or pressure bowl, on roller printing machines. the engraved rolls that apply color are arranged around the cylinder. (also see printing, roller printing.) 3. a slotted cylindrical housing for the needles in a circular-knitting machine. the number of slots per inch in the cylinder determines the cut of the machine. 4. see drying cylinders.

- Digital video pictures can be compressed with a number of techniques. these include: jpeg and jpeg-2000 (for still images), m-jpeg and mpeg (for moving pictures).

- A digital photograph creates an image file that is huge, a low-resolution 640x480 image has 307,200 pixels. if each pixel uses 24 bits (3 bytes) for true color, a single image takes up about a megabyte of storage space. to make image files smaller almost every digital camera uses some form of compression. see the jpg entry below.

- A method of reducing the size of a digital image file to free up the storage capacity of memory cards and hard drives. compression technologies are distinguished from one another by whether or not they remove detail and color from the image. lossless technologies compress image data without removing detail, while "lossy" technologies compress images by removing some detail. joint photographic experts group (jpeg) is a lossy compression format supported by jpeg, pdf and postscript language file formats. most video formats are also lossy formats. tiff files are not and, as such, are far more stable than jpegs and other lossy file formats.
- Reducing the number of bits needed to encode a digital signal, typically by eliminating long strings of identical bits or bits that do not change in successive sampling intervals (e.g., video frames).

- A procedure usually followed to determine the watertightness of the foundation and abutment rocks, as one phase of foundation test drilling done before the construction of dams. the test is performed by placing packer assemblies in diamond-drill holes to segregate each successive different stratum or each 5-foot depth, and water is injected into the borehole space between the packers with a high-pressure pump. the volume of water escaping into the rocks is a measure of the permeability, indicating the amount of water that will seep through the foundation or abutment of the dam and whether or not the dam foundation should be grouted.
