Stands for through the lens, refers to the metering system in regards to flash exposure. the flash emits light until it is turned off by the camera sensor. ettl is evaluative through the lens metering and fires a “preflash” to evaluate and calculate for lost light then compensates and fires the main flash. it happens so fast you do not see two flashes.
