  1. The maximum speed a hull can achieve without planing.

  2. The maximum efficient speed of a displacement-hulled vessel.

  3. The theoretical maximum speed a vessel can achieve without planeing. this is usually slightly faster than its displacement speed. (a rule of thumb for calculating potential hull speed is to multiply the square root of the vessel’s waterline length by 1.34.)

  4. The theoretical speed a boat can travel without planing, based on the shape of its hull. this speed is about 1.34 times the square root of the length of a boat at its waterline. since most monohull sailboats cannot exceed their hull speed, longer boats are faster.
