(огненная земля). подразделяется на кордильеры сев. америки и кордильеры юж. америки, или анды. наиболее высокие вершины: в сев. америке - г. мак-кинли (6193 м), в юж. - аконкагуа (6960 м). много действующих вулканов (катмай, сен-мигель, льяйма и др.). высокая тектоническая активность. кордильеры - климатическая граница, а также водораздел между атлантическим и тихим ок.
