    1. A small piece cut from a larger piece, member, etc., to make it more uniform or for symmetry.

    2. Among other things, rough set theory is concerned with reducing the number of attributes in an information table (database) by finding redundant attributes. a set of attributes x that define the same indiscernability relations (equivalence classes) as a larger set of attributes y is a reduct of the original set. when the reduct is the smallest possible reduct for a set of attributes, it is called a minimal reduct. note that neither the reduct nor the minimal reduct of y is unique. an attribute that is in all reducts is in the core. see also: core, indiscernable, rough set theory.
