Tabernacle

- A large bracket attached firmly to the deck, to which the foot of the mast is fixed. it has two sides or cheeks and a bolt forming the pivot around which the mast is raised and lowered.
- A strong trunk on the deck of river barges, forming a kind of hinge to enable them to lower the mast when going under bridges. also, used to elongate the mast of any boat by stepping it in a tabernacle.
- A device at the base of the deckmounted mast of a small boat or barge, which both holds it in place and allows it to pivot to pass under bridges.
