- Is part of normal training to enable air crews to obtain or retain the considerable skills needed to land aboard a ship at sea. for navy and marine pilots it entails taking off from the flight deck, flying around the ship and landing again for a short time before taking to the air again. following dod doctrine that stresses “unified air, land, sea, and special operations” army and air force aviators are sometimes assigned missions that require landing on, and operating from, u.s. navy or coast guard air-capable ships (see aviation support). this dictates that non-naval aviation units complete preparatory and sustainment training for operations in the maritime environment, including naval radio procedures, hand and arm signals, light signals and how to exit an aircraft under water. after the academic portion of their training, pilots have to make five real or simulated deck landings to acquire deck landing qualification.
