(нем . offizier, от ср.-век. лат. officiarius - должностное лицо), лицо командного (начальствующего) состава в вооруженных силах, полиции и жандармерии. впервые звание офицера появилось в кон. 16 в. сначала во франции, затем в других европейских государствах, в россии - в 30-х гг. 17 в. в полках "иноземного строя". в русской армии и флоте офицеры подразделялись (с нач. 18 в.) на обер- офицеров и штаб-офицеров в кон. 1917 офицерские звания упразднены; в ссср были введены в 1943 (см. звания воинские); сохранены в российской федерации.
