    5. A method of reasoning or learning that reasons by comparing the current situation to other situations that are in some sense similar.

    6. Likeness or similarities in structure or function but not in material existence. to argue by analogy is to infer from the fact that two systems that correspond in some respect must also correspond in other respects as yet unexamined. although the form of reasoning is appealing and has given rise to numerous inventions, it is particularly liable to yield wrong conclusions. in the theory of models, an analogy between two systems is explained by one simpler system that models both but by different homomorphisms.

    7. A perceived similarity between two items which can aid production and comprehension but which may also lead to errors of over-generalisation of rules.

    8. An analogy can contain metaphor or compare one thing as being like another but goes further, adding reasoning or explanation to illustrate a concept or process. it can help the coachee understand something complex by comparing it with something familiar as an example, exploring resemblances and relationships in something they had perhaps not considered. sigmund freud said of analogies ‘they can make one feel more at home’. for example, an analogy you could help a coachee to arrive at might be ‘i want my next bid to stand out from the rest – to sparkle like a diamond, to be strong under scrutiny and crystal clear in what i offer, yet reflecting different ideas depending on what the buyer wants to see’ see also clarifying

    9. A comparison used to explain or illustrate a concept in coaching or mentoring.
