Formerly, a medical specialist assigned to rn ships by the navy board, warranted with wardroom rank and entitled to walk the quarterdeck. appointment was originally subject to examination by one or more of the worshipful company of barber- surgeons, the sick & hurt board, the transport board, and/or the victualing board; but after 1832 qualifications were examined by the admiralty. later in the nineteenth century, surgeons became commissioned officers. the surgeon was the only fullyqualified medical person on the ship, and was assisted by surgeon’s mates who were inferior warrant officers with paramedical training. on 9th march 1798 dr. george balfour of virginia became the united states navy’s first medical officer. at that time the majority of ships’ surgeons were appointed and served as civilians, although some commanding officers awarded temporary commissions the for the duration of a specific cruise. in 1872 usn doctors became commissioned officers. see also medical services.
