- Said of an aerial or marine propeller in which the angle of the blades can be adjusted to optimize thrust. the mathematics of propulsion efficiency are extremely complex, but can be simplified by comparing propeller pitch to an automobile transmission. low gear and fine pitch each provide good acceleration but limited speed. high gear and coarse pitch provide greater thrust, allowing higher speed but less acceleration. ships with engines that work most efficiently at a steady pace can vary their speed by changing the pitch of their propellers. in contrast, a fixed pitch propeller can be more efficient at its designed speed and load, but is less flexible than one which can be adjusted to absorb virtually all the power the engine can produce at any combination of speed and vessel loading. (variable pitch is also called adjustable pitch or controllable pitch.)
