  1. Due to the earth's rotation, freely moving objects on the surface of the earth veer right in the northern hemisphere and left in the southern hemisphere. this effect is called the coriolis effect, and works, in particular, on winds and ocean currents. the

The movement of air (and hence storms) is deflected clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern by a hypothetical force postulated in 1843 by french mathematician gaspard coriolis. although the angular speed of terrestrial rotation is constant, its linear speed varies with latitude, being fastest at the equator and diminishing towards the poles. this has a geostrophic effect on the air, also tending to amplify surface currents by imposing circular motion on surface water, clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anti-clockwise in the southern.
