- Inert gas shielded metal joining process that uses a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. filler material, when needed, is manually fed into the molten weld puddle. also called tungsten inert gas welding. compare gas metal arc welding; shielded metal arc welding. gauss (g): old cgs unit of magnetic flux density denoting one flux line, or maxwell, passing through one square centimeter. the preferred unit of flux density is the tesla (t), where 1t=104g.
