    Monster, английский

    Monsters of the deep, английский
Sea serpents and monsters have been reported in all the world’s seas and oceans, being variously described as swimming dragons, writhing serpents, multi-armed horrors, and dinosaur survivors. reports have generally been dismissed as myth, legend, misidentification of known species, or the ramblings of over-imaginative seafarers, even though some of those claiming to be eyewitnesses have been scientists, naturalists, and experienced naval officers. the vast majority of the earth’s waters are unexplored, except for a few fathoms below the surface, so it is conceivable that unknown creatures dwell in remote areas or in troughs (going down further than the himalayas rise) which are far less explored and understood than the planets of our solar system. such creatures might, on rare occasions, find their way to the surface, to be briefly glimpsed before sounding again or dying in the unfamiliar environment. indeed, new species of marine animals or specimens of animals believed extinct are discovered almost every year. for example, the giant squid was thought to be a creature of myth and legend until 1878; the coelanth was found alive and well in 1938, seventy million years after it was supposed to have become extinct; and the four to six meter (13–19 foot) long megamouth shark was unknown until one was accidentally caught in 1976. in the ensuing thirty years there have only been 35 reported sightings or captures of this creature. another new species of shark was identified in mexican waters as recently as march 2006. other prehistoric animals may also have survived far from human eyes. in 1997, u.s. naval underwater sensors, placed to track soviet submarines, detected an unexplained sound with frequency characteristics typical of marine animals, but not matching any known vocalization pattern. although certainly of biological origin, the signal was far too loud to be produced by any recognized creature. “the bloop,” as it has been fancifully nicknamed, may well be emanating from an unknown giant beast lurking in the ocean depths. there is a huge body of conjecture concerning real or as yet undiscovered creatures which might have been mistaken for sea monsters. these include at least four bony fish, a crocodilian, and three invertebrate cephalopods whose visual characteristics might fool even experienced observers into thinking they had seen a monster. there is also an order of marine mammals which may have given rise to the mermaid legend. these are discussed in the appendix.
