- In hypothesis testing, the hypothesis we wish to falsify on the basis of the data. the null hypothesis is typically that something is not present, that there is no effect, or that there is no difference between treatment and control.
- A hypothesis of the form: there is no difference between a and b. this form of the hypothesis is the basis for statistical tests of significance, such as the t-test and the f-test. in the t-test, a and b are mean values. in the f-test, a and b are variances (squares of standard deviations)
