- A pad of material used to put on a wound the nurse put a wad of absorbent cotton over the sore.
- A kind of plug, closely fitting the bore of a gun, which is rammed home over the shot to confine it to its place, and sometimes also between the shot and the cartridge: generally made of coiled junk, otherwise a rope grommet, &c.
- One of two plugs, usually made of hay, old canvas, or condemned rope junk, that were rammed down the bore of a smoothbore cannon—one ahead of the charge to keep it in place and reduce windage; the other in front of the ball to prevent it rolling out due to heeling of the ship. wads were slightly larger than the bore for a good fit. in action they were kept in a net close to the shot rack.
